A handsome Liberty & Co. “Tudric” pewter biscuit box, model 0194, designed by celebrated Manx designer Archibald Knox. Of compact cubic form, the box is decorated in low relief with a distinctive geometric and stylized foliate pattern characteristic of Knox’s synthesis of Celtic ornament and the Arts & Crafts/Art Nouveau aesthetic. The fitted lid is surmounted by a broad, circular raised finial.

Knox’s designs for Liberty’s Tudric range are among the most recognizable expressions of British Art Nouveau metalwork. Introduced around the turn of the 20th century, the Tudric line translated progressive contemporary design into functional domestic objects executed in pewter. This example displays the strong geometry, restrained ornament, and subtly modeled surfaces associated with Knox’s work for Liberty & Co.
